Scattered strong storms possible Sunday evening

10:10PM: DeKalb County and areas Northeast have the best chance to see stronger wind gusts over the next hour or so. There are no severe thunderstorms at the moment, but be prepared for a quick downpour and brief sub-severe wind gusts.

9:35PM: The line of storms is beginning to weaken as it approaches Northern Illinois. Aside from the tornado warning for Whiteside County (until 9:45PM), the main concerns will be for wind gusts of 50-55 mph along this line as it moves Northeast at about 40 mph.

9:10PM UPDATE: A TORNADO WARNING has been issued for Southwestern Whiteside County until 9:30PM. A radar confirmed tornado is on the ground just South of Hillsdale, moving Northeast at 40 mph. Take shelter if you are in the path of this storm!

8PM RADAR UPDATE: The line of storms has maintained most of its strength so far, now approaching the Quad Cities to our Southwest. Numerous severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings is out along the line, with still a chance for a few of them to be extended our way between 9-10PM. At the current pace, storms would reach Rockford by 10PM.

After some drier hours this afternoon, attention now lies to the Southwest as a cold front approaches the region later tonight. Along this front, a line of strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible. Note the line of severe thunderstorm warnings as of 6PM across Missouri and Southeastern Iowa. These will lift Northeast through the evening tonight.

Main line of storms will arrive after 9PM in a weakening state, bringing the chance for some gusty winds and heavy rain. I don't expect widespread severe weather as there will be only a limited amount of instability for these storms by the time they arrive here, but strong winds just aloft may help to maintain some of their strength.

This main line of storms will lift through the area after 12AM, but a few spotty showers and storms will be possible along the warm front near and just after midnight. These storms may also produce a chance for some stronger winds, so we may need to remain weather aware until 2-3AM before the front clears the area. Stay tuned for updates through the evening!
