Enjoyable weather remains ahead of weekend heat and storm chances

Thursday ended up being a beautiful day once the early day showers dissipated.

Afternoon highs peaked in the low 80s under plenty of sun. If you loved yesterday's forecast, then you are going to absolutely love today's weather. Little warmer this afternoon as highs set their eyes on the upper 80s under a few afternoon clouds.

In even better news, while we see a few degree jump in our temperatures, humidity will not be an issue. A great forecast for City Market in Rockford and also the beginning of Tutty Baker Fest in Freeport! Skies turn partly cloudy overnight, with an isolated chance for a thunderstorm or two arriving around or shortly after sunrise.

Ridging to the west will put us in the perfect position for not only a spike in heat and humidity levels, but also multiple chances for strong to severe storms. Storms that form in this kind of atmospheric set up are called "ridge-riding" storms. These are long-lived organized thunderstorms from east of the Rocky Mountains and rotate around the counter-clockwise flow of a high pressure system.

The Stateline remains under a Marginal Risk for both Saturday and Sunday, with strong winds and heavy downpours being the biggest concerns.

What will also drive this type of storm pattern will be the hotter, more humid air mass that settles in. Highs peak in the low 90s Sunday and Monday, marking the first time Rockford has seen 90° weather since late-June. And with dew points values climbing into the upper 70s, expect there to be tons of atmospheric instability for storms to use up.

On top of that, which will help place heat index values close to 100°. As we've previously mentioned, Sunday features a bit more of a cap, meaning it will be harder for storms to mature. Be prepared for the incoming heat as well as having multiple ways to get watches and warnings. This summer-like air mass aims to remain in place until our next frontal passage which looks to occur Tuesday. Highs post cold front will end up closer to average.
