A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for the following counties in Illinois: Stephenson, Jo Daviess, Carroll, Whiteside, Ogle, Lee, and Winnebago, and in southern Wisconsin for: Green and Rock. The watch will last until 11pm.
A Flood Watch has also been issued for all of northern Illinois beginning at 6pm until late Monday night.
Thunderstorms have already developed in Iowa ahead of an upper-level disturbance moving southeast from the Dakotas. As this disturbance moves into an unstable environment in Iowa, thunderstorms have quickly developed with numerous severe thunderstorm warnings already being issued.
The expectation is for these storms to form into a line of storms, quickly moving towards the Mississippi River around 5pm/6pm, then moving east through 10pm. Damaging wind gusts of 75 mph, or greater, will be the greatest threat along with the risk for spin-up tornadoes.
Additionally, flash flooding is also a concern as storms may begin to back-build along a boundary increasing the risk for flash flooding. Within those locations, rainfall rates of two inches per hour are possible leading to the potential for 2-4 inches of rain to occur. Unfortunately, this heavy rain looks to fall over areas that have already experienced a significant amount of rain already. So, it wouldn't take much to induce flash flooding.
Bottom line: Remain alert of the weather this evening. Consider changing plans, especially if you know you'll be out as the storms are expected to move through. Have multiple ways to receive watches and warnings and be prepared to act if warnings are issued for your area.
