Wednesday afternoon weather update

6:20pm Update: Scattered showers and thunderstorms continue across northern Illinois, but both the intensity and coverage will continue to decrease through the evening. There may still be some isolated shower activity through the night, but skies will remain partly to mostly cloudy. Areas of fog will develop through Thursday morning with temperatures in the mid-60s.

Temperatures have warmed into the low to mid 80s Wednesday afternoon with the heat index reaching the upper 80s in a few locations.

The cloud cover and light showers from Wednesday morning were quick to clear leaving skies mostly sunny through early afternoon. But with the heating of the day and an upper-level disturbance moving through Iowa, isolated thunderstorms have developed across northern Illinois.

Storm coverage is a little more widespread across Iowa, closer tied to the upper-level low. This is also where a few isolated strong to severe storms are possible through the evening. Storm coverage locally will remain isolated, but heavy downpours and small hail may occur with any of the stronger storms over northern Illinois.

As the sun sets Wednesday night overall storm coverage will decrease with the loss of daytime heating. Skies will turn partly cloudy with temperatures falling into the low to mid 60s. Low level moisture will remain in place, and this could lead to some fog through early Thursday morning.
