Heat Advisory issued for a portion of northern Illinois

Late in the day Thursday, the National Weather Service placed some of our Stateline locales under a HEAT ADVISORY. This is for Jo-Daviess, Stephenson, Carroll, and Whiteside Counties and will run from noon to 7PM today.

Temperatures both today and Saturday will hover near the 90° mark. Combine that with dew point temperatures in the low 70s and you get heat indices in the mid to upper 90s. If you plan to be out and about, especially during peak heating hours which is from 12PM to 5PM, practice heat safety. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids as well as take breaks in shady spots or in a A/C cooled room.

Storm chances remain isolated today, though they tag along with the incoming high heat and humidity in a more impactful fashion Saturday.

Some of which may be severe. In their latest round of severe outlooks, the Storm Prediction Center placed areas north of Savanna, Freeport, and Beloit under a level 2 Slight Risk. Areas south of that line, including Rockford, remain under a level 1 Marginal Risk.

This will be for the late afternoon and evening hours Saturday as forecast models show a potent line of showers and storms entering the area. Severe-wise, the biggest concerns will be damaging winds at or above 60 mph and also large hail. And due to the fact that our atmosphere will be holding lots of moisture during that time, heavy downpours and flash flooding will also be something to monitor.

Storm chances should wind down after midnight, remaining isolated for Sunday. Afternoon highs won't be as warm, peaking in the upper 80s.
