Locally dense fog possible early Friday morning

Foggy mornings have become a common theme in the Stateline the last couple of mornings, with dense fog likely developing again late Thursday night into Friday morning. This will have an impact on the commute during the morning, so make sure you remain alert and use caution while driving as visibility could quickly change in a short distance.

The fog from Thursday morning turned into mostly cloudy skies which helped hold afternoon temperatures in the mid and upper 70s. Rockford reached 79 degrees with a little boost of the late day sun. Skies will continue to clear through the evening, leaving us with mostly clear skies overnight. Temperatures are expected to fall on either side of 60 degrees.

Radiational cooling, which is the process of heat loss from the earth's surface on calm, clear nights, has been very effective leading to the development of fog. Since cooler air is more dense than warm air it sinks down near the surface and begins to stabilize. This cooling process also allows the air to become saturated, cooling closer to the dew point temperature. This is how we get fog to form. As the sun comes up and begins to heat the air the temperature rises, moving further away from the dew point temperature allowing the fog to clear.
