Hot and humid Sunday, big changes arrive next week

Saturday was HOT, HOT, HOT! Ahead of a lake breeze boundary, high temperatures for a few locales including Rockford landed in the low 90s. That marked the 12th time since May 1st where highs in Rockford peaked at or above the 90° mark. This is 4 more 90° days than the average.

Today will be no different. With a stationary front sitting across central Wisconsin, winds will be out of the southwest. This will allow for highs in the upper 80s, close to the 90° mark. When you factor in the humidity, heat indices may wind up closer to the mid 90s. If you have any outdoor plans such as attending the final day of the Ogle County Fair or Festa Italiana, remember to drink plenty of fluids, wear light clothing, and take breaks in the shade.

Towards this evening, the previously mentioned front will stall just to our north, allowing an isolated storm chance to develop into Monday. This also means the Stateline will wake up to another warm start, with most landing in the low 70s.

Monday's forecast ALL DEPENDS on the location of this frontal boundary. For instance, if this front didn't stall across southern Wisconsin and proceeded to shift southward, that would result in a drier and cooler forecast. However, if the boundary stalls and sits over the Stateline, this would keep our winds out of the south, resulting in another hot and muggy afternoon. As it stands, the more likely scenario is the 2nd option, which would also give us a better opportunity for evening and overnight storms as the front slides through.

For that, the Storm Prediction Center has placed almost the entire area under a level 2 of 5 Slight Risk for severe weather. Thunderstorms will be capable of producing damaging winds and large hail as well as heavy rainfall with the amount of moisture that will be present along the frontal boundary.

This is subject to change so please keep a tab on the forecast over the next 24 hours.

Once the front finally passes through, our weather improves significantly as a cooler and more pleasant airmass settles in behind it. Afternoon highs Tuesday will end up in the low 70s, with mid to upper 70s in the works for the remainder of the week.
