Small break from humidity, but summer heat set to return

A slightly cooler than normal pattern will take shape in the short-term with temperatures warming to the mid and upper 70s, with overnight lows falling into the 50s. But as southerly winds soon take hold towards the end of the week and weekend, afternoon temperatures will begin to climb.

High pressure currently located over the Midwest and Great Lakes will begin to shift east, settling into the Mid-Atlantic by the weekend. As it does, winds will turn southwest taking some of the heat that has been out over the west and southwest, shifting it across the Plains and Midwest. This will allow our temperatures to warm back through the 80s, possibly reaching 90 degrees by next Sunday.

The degree of heat, however, will depend on cloud cover and rain chances - which at this point look to stay on the lower end. Strong ridging aloft (in the upper levels of the atmosphere) will remain situated across much of the country, a pattern that looks to hold through the end of the month and keep afternoon temperatures above average. The average high for the end of August is 80-81 degrees. It's not out of the question that by next Sunday temperatures could be approaching 90 degrees, if not low 90s, assuming the chance for rain and clouds remain low. As for precipitation chances, it looks like the pattern change will come with limited chances for precipitation. Not necessarily a good thing when looking at a several days with dry weather.
