Stateline returns to above average temperatures this weekend

It was yet another seasonably cool day in the Stateline with high temperatures only reaching the mid and upper 70s, including a high of 76° in Rockford. This now marks 7 of the last 8 days to feature below average temperatures, including multiple of those with highs only in the 70s. But a pattern change is on the way as we return to a degree of summer-like heat and humidity that we haven't seen since early August. This weekend will feature highs well into the 80s and we could see 90-degree readings both Monday and Tuesday.

This is mainly as the surface high pressure that brought us the cool stretch had begun to pull away. Initially, we won't feel much of the impact from that. But high temperatures will be a touch warmer tonight than the previous two nights, only falling to the mid-50s for the overnight lows.

More of the direct effects from the heat and humidity will be present toward the weekend and beyond as those afternoon highs reach the 80s/90s with heat index values even warmer each day, reaching the 90s and near triple digits especially Monday and Tuesday.

We stay dry in the short term, but the additional moisture will produce more chances for rain especially Saturday evening/overnight with a scattered storm threat as well. Sunday and Monday afternoons look mostly dry, but the degree of heat and humidity may provide enough for a few very isolated storms to develop. Higher coverage of storms may then return as a cold front passes Monday night or Tuesday.

Lately the 7-day forecast has looked more characteristic of September than August, but this week looks more like July. Isolated storm chances look daunting over the weekend and early next week, but most of those time periods will remain dry, especially Sunday and Monday afternoons with warmer mid-levels remaining capped, preventing widespread storm chances. Monday night into Tuesday will bring a passing cold front will bring more storm potential before a small cool down by the middle to end of the week.
