Monday and Tuesday will likely be our hottest days so far this summer with temperatures well into the 90s and heat index making it feel like 105-115°. By 11AM Monday, it will already feel more like the low 90s and will only get worse from there. Peak heat index reaching near 110° Monday afternoon.
Heat alerts are out for each day as dangerous heat sets in. Rockford and areas South/East are under a heat advisory until 8PM Monday, while S Wisconsin and NW IL are under an excessive heat warning also until 8PM Monday. Heat index values could reach 110°.
Tuesday, everyone is under an excessive heat watch for the daytime hours that will be converted into a warning or advisory depending on the confidence from NWS of how high the heat index will get. That said, Tuesday has the potential to be worse than Monday with heat index up to 115°.
All that being said, it is imperative to keep safe in the heat, including staying hydrated, limiting time outdoors, and knowing the signs of heat related illnesses.
Also of note, any time we get this much heat and humidity, it doesn't take much for storms to form. The threat for Monday's storms is mostly North and West of the Stateline, but a few gusty storms may be possible this far South late Monday night. Tuesday, we may have a few storms closer to the region, with a Level 2/5 Risk along Northern areas of the Stateline and Level 1/5 Marginal risk elsewhere. Main concerns with any storms will be damaging winds and large hail.
The storms Tuesday form along a cold front that will shunt the worst of the heat just South. That said, it will still be quite warm and humid Wed/Thurs, just not to the dangerous level of Mon/Tue. Temperatures moderate closer to average by the weekend with drier conditions as well.
