Tonight begins the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. This annual meteor shower peaks around mid-August each year and will be between the 11th and 12th this year. Meteors will be most visible between midnight and dawn, particularly Sunday night into Monday morning. Up to 50 meteors per hour may be visible during the peak.
For best viewing conditions, get away from city lights, allow your eyes to adjust to the dark, and look to the North or North Northeast. This is the general direction you will be able to view the meteors. Often, they will come in pulses with a few within a minute then a few minutes of break. Remember, the 50 per hour is an average.
We will see partly cloudy skies through the night, with a gradual rise in cloud cover into tomorrow morning. This may block the ideal viewing toward dawn, but skies should be mostly clear early in the night. Temperatures will be falling into the mid-50s by morning though, you may want a jacket if you plan to sky-watch!
