Lack of meaningful rainfall persists into next week

We will see more sunshine to start out the day Sunday, helping to boost high temperatures into the low 70s. Winds will be a bit stronger from the Southeast, gusting near 20 mph at times. But we will end up dry, capping off a pleasant weekend.

Moisture will increase along with cloud cover Sunday night, but scattered showers will only be possible for a short window early Monday. Rain will remain light and scattered in nature, with only up to a tenth of an inch of rain possible.

Any rainfall would be a welcome sight, as we have been very dry since the start of September. Only 1.36" of rain has fallen at the Rockford since September 1st, over three inches below average. That makes this September 1st - October 11th the 12th driest such time frame on record. On the year, we are now nearly 8.5" shy from average totals through today's date.

Luckily, we may be able to see a more active pattern begin to take hold toward the end of next week and the weekend. A large-scale trough, or dip in the jet stream, will promote more storm systems passing nearby, which will lead to more meaningful rain chances beginning Friday.
