We've entered into the season of the official 'ups and downs' with the forecast, with our 'up' being this afternoon and 'down' arriving Tuesday. A sun-filled sky and strong southerly wind gave afternoon temperatures a nice little boost into the mid and upper 60s, with Rockford's high reaching 67 degrees.
Cloud cover has quickly been moving in from the west ahead of a cold front that'll bring with it not only the chance for a few showers later this evening, but also a quickly falling temperature. Light rain associated with the front will move in around 8pm, lasting through Midnight. Rain showers are not expected to last any longer than an hour or two at any one give location. The rain won't be as heavy as what we had over the weekend, but totals could approach a tenth of an inch in some spots. It does look like some of the higher rainfall totals will end up in southern Wisconsin.
The strong southerly wind should subside some after sunset but could briefly increase with the passage of the front around 10pm, shifting to the west through the night. As colder air moves in Tuesday west winds will increase quite a bit throughout the day, with gusts nearing 35-40 mph. Temperatures will also remain on the cooler side as highs struggle to make it much above the mid-50s. With the strong wind, wind chills - yes wind chill - throughout the afternoon will stay in the 40s.
Scattered showers will also occur throughout the late morning and afternoon before subsiding some by Tuesday evening. All in all, not much rain can be expected but it'll be a raw and blustery October day. The colder air sticks around through the week with highs both Wednesday and Thursday in the 50s and overnight lows in the 30s. It's likely we'll see frost Wednesday night/Thursday morning, but more widespread frost - and potentially our first freeze - could occur Thursday night/Friday morning.
