Today provides us with a better opportunity for our locales to briefly see the 90° mark. Temperatures to start will be warmer, we'll see plenty of sun, and our winds will be warm and on the breezier side. Now, if we do see the mercury touch 90°, this would tie the record high set back in 1922.
Though winds will be a tad bit strong Sunday, surface temperatures won't be as warm though staying very summer-like in the upper 80s.
Sunday would be the final day to enjoy the "second summer" season as a strong cold front is set to pass through sometime Monday. Behind it, a noticeably cooler airmass will spill in from Canada, leaving afternoon highs in the upper 70s Monday, then upper 60s for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Moisture will also be pooling along Monday's cold front, bringing the chance for showers. Considering the latest drought monitor showed an expansion of the severe drought across N. Illinois, we will welcome this rain chance with open arms. As of this moment, forecast models show accumulations ranging from .25"-.75". Now, this scenario may change as Monday approaches so stay tuned this evening and on Sunday for any updates. An isolated thunderstorm cannot be ruled out as the front pushes through.
