Rain chances, gusty winds return this weekend

It's hard to believe that we are now in the second half of October and we're still talking the potential for 80-degree weather across northern Illinois.

Like Thursday, warmer winds will be present. This time however, winds will be slightly stronger and more out of the southwest. What this will do is bring most locales into the upper 70s this afternoon, with a spot or two briefly touching the 80° mark. Partial sun tags along with today's robust wind, with increasing clouds taking place this evening.

Eventually, this will pave the way for the first of many chances for rain as a couple of systems move across the Midwest and the Great Lakes.

The first chance arrives late tonight into the early stages of Saturday ahead of a cold front. This won't be a widespread rain and will likely only give us a couple tenths of an inch. But an isolated storm or two could bump those numbers up.

Forecast models then show a more organized batch of rain pushing in late Saturday afternoon into the early stages of Sunday. Unfortunately, the track of the low is enough south and east to where we miss out on the richer moisture and precipitation.

Locally, a few showers and a storm or two will be possible. Again, nothing widespread as rainfall totals locally could be around .25", possibly up to .5". The axis of heavier precipitation looks to end up to our south and east, including areas in eastern Illinois, northwest and northern Indiana.

Along with the weekend rain chances comes a swing in temperatures and gusty winds. Winds Saturday will be primarily focused of the southwest, allowing highs temperatures to stay in the 70s. Once a deepening low and cold front slide through overnight into Sunday, winds turn to the northwest and become a bit stronger, possibly gusting up to 35 mph. This will leave high temperatures for Sunday in the low 60s.
