Near-record warmth filters in ahead of Monday's strong cold front

Summer hasn't loosened it's grip since the seasonal change to autumn occurred back on September 22nd. To further prove this, daily highs at the Rockford Airport have ended up 10° or more above early-October standards since last Friday.

Today will be no different. In fact, today's high temperature of 89° falls short of Rockford's record high for October 3rd, 90° back in 1997.

Near-record heat will linger into the weekend as a southwesterly wind remains in place. Winds will be more on the breezier side as the pressure gradient at the surface tightens between a high pressure system to the east, and a low pressure system in the Upper Midwest. This will bring the possibility for 25 mph gusts on Saturday, then 30 mph gusts on Sunday. Keep in mind, this gusty wind in combination with the extremely dry ground and vegetation may elevate our brush and grass fire potential. So please refrain from burning this weekend.

We do see a little bit of moisture build in ahead of this cold front, which may allow for a few isolated showers. The bigger story with Monday's frontal passage will be the exit of this summer-like weather with a more fall-like feel taking it's place.

Afternoon highs will fall from the upper 80s, close to the 90° mark this weekend to the upper 60s starting Tuesday. Low temperatures will also take a big hit, falling from the low 60s to the low 40s. So dust off your light jacket or sweatshirt because you will need either one by the middle of next week!
