Northern Illinois to welcome scattered rain chances after long dry spell

It's been a little over two weeks since Rockford and the Stateline last saw a chance for rain. And it shows with how much the drought situation has deteriorated not only across N. Illinois, but across the entire state. We even saw a few brush and field fires start up in spots in DeKalb County Sunday afternoon.

However, rain chances are expected to return today as a sharp cold front sweeps through the northern half of the lower 48. Now, any rain chance will be scattered and should hold off until the midday and early-afternoon hours, leaving the first half of our Monday dry with clouds increasing.

The first batch of showers and even isolated storms should continue into the early evening before a lull or a decrease in coverage settles in.

From there, forecast models show pockets of rain redeveloping and spreading over the area, with chances remaining present for much of the night. This time around, most locales will see at least light rain as coverage will be slightly higher.

Rain should wind down before mid-morning Tuesday. As previously discussed, this won't put much of a dent in the drought situation. Most locales should end up with a quarter to a  half inch of rain. Highest totals look to occur to our north and west.

Along with the rain, this sharp cold front will also get rid of the the summer-like feel and replace it with a more fall-like airmass. Afternoon highs will still reach the upper 70s for most early Monday afternoon but will quickly fall toward the evening behind the frontal passage. Expect lows tonight to wind up in the low 50s, with highs only climb into the upper 60s Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
