Intense lake effect snow event along the Lake Michigan shoreline

Intense lake effect snow has begun to set up across Lake Michigan. An extreme temperature difference between air just above the lake and upper air levels has created some extreme snowfall rates exceeding 2" per hour in some spots across Northern Indiana and far Southwestern Michigan late Sunday evening.

This axis of intense lake effect snow will slide Westward a bit through the evening, pushing into Northeastern Illinois after 9-10PM. The furthest West it may reach is parts of McHenry and Kane Counties, so areas closer to I-39 are in the clear aside from lingering flurries.

Through the night, this band of very heavy snow will progress back East into Northwestern Indiana again, but instantaneous snowfall rates may exceed 2" per hour while it progresses along the Southern shore of the lake. Several inches of snow can be expected along much of the Lake Michigan shoreline, as even a couple hours of this intense band may yield upwards of 3-4" of snow in a short amount of time.

A winter storm warning (pink) has been issued for DuPage, Lake, Cook, Will, and Kankakee Counties in Illinois until Monday afternoon. Northwestern Indiana will remain under the warning until 6PM Monday. A winter weather advisory (purple) surrounds the warning where lighter snow totals may occur.
