Tracking the switch from rain to snow Saturday evening

10PM UPDATE: Light snow continues across the area late this evening, pushing East. Colder, drier air will slide in from the Northwest late tonight, cutting off snowfall toward 1-2AM. Clouds will begin to thin out toward the morning, allowing overnight lows to drop into the upper 20s.

7:30PM UPDATE: Snow has been coming down steady enough in Freeport to coat the grass! But the pavement behind it is just wet for now with nearly all the snow melting on contact. If snowfall rates keep up like this for a couple of hours, minor slushy accumulations may be possible on roadways.

7PM UPDATE: Looks like we've flipped over to snow at least in Beloit and on the NE side of Rockford. Rockford airport now reporting rain and snow mixed just before the top of the hour.

6PM UPDATE: We've flipped things over to snow in Galena and Monroe (surface temp 33°) but it's still just rain in Janesville (36°). Heavier rates of precipitation are moving into NW Illinois, so once that flips over to snow, expect rapid drops in visibility through 10-11PM.

4PM RADAR AND TEMPS: A few snowflakes are beginning to mix in across Southern Wisconsin as surface temperatures have fallen to the mid-30s. Much of Illinois remains in the 40s, so still liquid rain for now. We still look to be on track for things to be mostly snow by 7-8PM.

Rain will flip over to snow from Northwest to Southeast between 4-8PM, with most of far Northern Illinois likely seeing all snow by 8PM. Lingering warm air across Southern parts of the area may keep things rain a bit longer, but everyone will likely be flipped over to snow by 10PM.

An inch or two of snow may come down, but warmer pavement temperatures will likely limit any minor accumulations to grassy and elevated surfaces. Temperatures will continue to drop through the night, so be on the lookout for isolated slick spots Sunday morning.
