Rain showers transitioning to our first snowfall expected this evening

As we begin to roll through October and November most people don't want to admit it but that is usually when we here in the Midwest begin to look at the prospects of our first snowfall of the year. For those who have been waiting, you won't have to wait much longer as satellite and radar this morning clearly show a system off to our west that will make its way here into the later portions of today.

The big question is though when will we see snowfall with this system? As we go through the day temperatures will remain above freezing through the afternoon, however into the early evening hours cooler air north of the low-pressure system will make it's way into the region allowing temperatures both aloft and at the surface to cool below freezing. As this happens consistent rain showers early on will gradually transition into snow.
Timing this system out, rain showers can begin as early as 10 a.m. this morning lasting into the afternoon hours. However, as the previously mentioned cooler air wraps in behind the low, snowflakes will gradually mix in changing to primarily snow by 7-10 p.m. this evening. Lingering snow showers will last into the morning hours of tomorrow as well however snowfall accumulations look to remain low.
Thanks to our ground temperatures still being well above freezing, it will take longer for these surfaces to cool down enough for snowfall to stick through today. Because of this, snowfall accumulation totals look to remain just near an inch or slightly under for most with even most expected to melt on impact. However, even with minor accumulations slick roadways will still be possible today so take precautions on roadways through the day and evening.
