Latest on this weekend's accumulating snow potential

Once we get through the Wednesday and Thursday's blustery winds, our attention will shift to our next system which is scheduled to arrive this weekend. Just in time for Stroll on State.

While it is still a bit early in the to discuss the "how much" factor, we are seeing better agreement on the storm system's overall track. This will be a "Colorado Rockies/Panhandle" low, which typically takes a brief dip into the southern plains before lifting northeast towards the Great Lakes.

What we also know is that cold air will be in place ahead of the system's arrival. Temperatures Friday afternoon will peak in the low 30s, drop into the mid 20s Saturday morning, then stay in the low 30s for the start of the weekend. This would increase the chance for not only snow, but accumulating snow.

Timing-wise, snow chances would move in late Friday, staying put for much of the day Saturday and possibly extend into early Sunday. Again, how much snow and where the heaviest will occur will all depend on the speed, strength, and final track of the storm system. It does look like the bulk of potential snow will move through Saturday afternoon, Saturday evening, and Saturday night.

We will also need to monitor where the 32° line (rain/snow mix line) sets up because if that ends up closer than forecast, that could lower totals. At this moment, in time, stay up to date with the forecast as changes are likely as we approach the weekend.

Whether or not northern Illinois ends up seeing minor accumulations/impacts or a decent snow event are yet to seen, but it's something to keep in mind as holiday plans may need to be adjusted.

Behind this weekend's storm system, temperatures fall further down the thermometer as another batch of colder air spills in. This will leave afternoon highs in the 20s for Sunday and Monday and overnight lows in the teens. We may see a few locales fall into the single-digits, especially Monday morning. Keep those layers handy!
