Northern lights will be possible again across northern Illinois this evening

Did you catch the northern lights last night? A strong coronal mass ejection (CME) or solar storm hit impacted the Earth's atmosphere Tuesday evening, making them visible as far south as the Gulf coast.

Before we move forward, I want to give a big shout out to all the viewers who sent in pictures.

Now, if you missed out on last night's display, there will be another opportunity this evening. Data shows another potent solar storm is scheduled to arrive during the mid to late morning hours today. Now, this would give areas in Asia and Europe a better opportunity for a northern lights display as nightfall will have already happened. For the states, we will have to see if the energy brought in by the incoming CME lingers into our nightfall. IF that occurs, we'll be in for another beautiful display.

Weather-wise, some to the southwest of Rockford will have high clouds to deal with. The best viewing conditions will be to our north in Wisconsin as cloud cover will be less of an issue.
